The city of Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic. From sampling its world famous beer to magnificent architecture, you’re sure to find plenty of things to do to occupy your time. Prague is quite a compact city, you can clock up the miles on foot or by bike if you fancy exploring the city on 2 wheels. The closest airport is Florence International Airport where you can catch a bus into the city centre. The journey takes around 20 minutes. There are plenty of great sites and attractions in Prague and we’ve given you the lowdown on just a few of them below:
Make a wish at the Infant Statue of Prague
Sometimes referred to as the Child of Prague, the Infant Child of Prague is a Roman Catholic statue that depicts Jesus Christ as an infant (no surprises there!). The statue can be found in the heart of the city at the Mala Strana. It’s a hugely popular tourist attraction as well as a shrine for believers to make wishes and pray. The statue dates back to the 16th Century and is contained within an ornate gilded shrine.
Stroll across the Charles Bridge
Take advantage of one of Prague’s free tourist attractions; a simple stroll across the 14th Century Charles Bridge. Whilst a simple experience, it’s certainly one you should tick off your list of things to do in Prague. Charles Bridge has some serious historical significance, too. It was built as a replacement for another bridge that was washed away by floods. Originally commissioned in 1357 by Charles IV and completed in 1390, the bridge wasn’t dubbed Charles’ until the 19th Century.
Visit Prague’s Jewish Quarter
Located in the middle of the Vltava River and the Old Town, Josefov (or the Jewish Quarter as its commonly known) is an area of Prague that is steeped in rich history. In the 13th century, Jews living in Prague were made to leave their homes and subsequently reside in this one area. A lot of the buildings in the area were destroyed in the 19th century but there are still several historical buildings that can be explored such as six synagogues which are sure to be of interest to history buffs.
Take a trip to the Old Town Square
A trip to Prague wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the atmospheric Old Town Square. Amidst the hustle and bustle of tourists crowding these historic streets you’ll find plenty of alfresco restaurants as well as plenty of magnificent architecture. Make sure you time your visit to Old Town Hall well so that you can watch the mechanical clock which marks the turn of the hour in great style - the clock is the jewel in the city’s crown and is thought of as being the best preserved mechanical clock in the world. If this wasn’t reason enough to take a trip to the Old Town, you’ll find the square packed with plenty of musicians, street performers and merchants offering you their wares.
Explore the ancient Prague Castle
A trip to Prague wouldn’t be complete without visiting the famous Prague Castle. The largest ancient castle in the world, it’s no wonder why this is one of the most visited attractions in the whole city. The castle itself is a magnificent architectural gem perched atop a hilly vantage point and it’s twin spite church, St Vitus Cathedral, is an attraction in its own right and has become synonymous with the castle itself. Around the castle you’ll find a park with leafy pathways, perfect for ambling along whilst taking in the sights of this historic attraction.
Sample some local cuisine
If you’re an adventurous diner, Prague is a great place to sample some traditional Czech cuisine. Koleno, otherwise known as the decidedly less appealing ‘pork knuckle’ is a popular Czech and German dish. Effectively a large chunk of pork knee, the meat is usually marinated in beer and served with dark Czech bread and pickled vegetables.
If you’re not feeling so adventurous, you’ll find plenty of restaurants in Prague to suit every taste and budget. If it’s a cosy atmosphere you’re after, head over to Portfolio Restaurant and sample their extensive cocktail menu. For a more upscale dining experience, Alcron Restaurant offers art deco interiors with an international themed menu.
Take a look at the seven foot tall Freud statue
Within Prague’s Old Town lies an urban hub known as Stare Mesto. Wander the cobbled streets and gaze upwards where you’ll be met by a huge sculpture of the famous psycho-analyst Sigmund Freud. This quirky seven foot tall sculpture is hugely popular around the world and has been shown in exhibitions in cities all around the world such as Berlin, London and Chicago.
Sample the world-class Czech beer
If you’re after the perfect pint of pivo (beer) then the Czech Republic is a great starting point. Prague offers a huge choice of bars which serve up some popular Czech lagers such as Staropramen and Budvar as well as craft beers from some of the top microbreweries in Prague. A majority of Czech beers are light, naturally brewed from hand-picked hops. Darker ales are becoming more popular though but the classic Czech beer is chilled, light and heady. Beer connoisseurs are sure to enjoy a trip to the Prague Beer Museum where you can take your pick from a choice of 31 top beers on tap.
Shop ‘til you drop at Europark Shopping Centre
If it’s retail therapy you’re after, Prague’s Europark Shopping Centre is home to a number of stores that cater to every taste and budget. Inside you’ll find everything from famous international stores such as Lee, Wrangler, Marionnaud and H&M as well as Kara Trutnov stocking trendy men’s and ladies wear as well as designer handbags. If you can't find what you’re looking for at Europark Shopping Centre there are plenty of other shopping centres across Prague including Centrum Chodov, Palladium, Atrium Flora, My Narodni plus many more.
Let it be at the Lennon Wall
The Lennon Wall is a tribute to one of Liverpool’s finest musical exports, The Beatles and fans of the popular band should definitely tick this one off their list. The wall is adorned in The Beatles and John Lennon graffiti, quotes and lyrics (some of which go as far back as the 1908s). Be sure to stop by and pay homage to one of Britain’s best loved bands.
